Santander is a bank and financial services firm serving consumers in the United Kingdom. The bank is
one of the UK’s leading personal financial services company and one of the largest providers of
mortgages and savings in the UK. The bank has roughly 20,000 employees and over 14 million
customers. Additionally, the bank has around 1,000 branches and 50 corporate business centers. The
bank was only established in 2010 when Abbey National was combined with branches of Bradford and
Bingley and was renamed Santander. Later Alliance and Leicester merged into the newly named
Santander bank.
Santander has actually been ranked one of the worst banks for customer service by the U.K. retail
banking satisfaction study. A simple search shows that the bank has the reputation for being the worst
bank for customer service in Great Britain.

Clearly customers are dissatisfied with Santander’s customer service. The Guardian says their Money
section receives more complaints about Santander than all the other banks combined. Santander’s
customer complaints in 2011 were 8 times higher than Nationwide and 4 times worse than Llyods and
HSBC.
Complaints are wide ranged from Santander not depositing checks in a timely manner, money being
put in the wrong account, and being promised sign-up bonuses that never actually got paid.
The company however promises it’s making changes. They are now trying to offer more compensation
for mistakes and personal apologies.
